"It is the 21st century, yet 21 million people are still performing forced labour. They are modern slaves, generating USD 150 billion for the criminal networks that exploit them on an annual basis. This has to end. That is why it voted in favour of the Le Hyaric report and its call for the authorisation of opening negotiations on the ILO’s 2014 Protocol on the Forced Labour Convention. We need new tools and resources for combating forced labour. But most vital will be coordination amongst Member States. If we really want to eradicate slavery, and stop the exploitation of workers that is undercutting the wages of others, Member States simply cannot go at it alone, in spite of best intentions. They can only make a change if they act together, for example by adopting stronger rules across Europe to prevent undercutting, and strengthening the Agency Workers and Posted Workers Directives. I call on Member States to do so, so that we can make slavery history."@en1
