"Madam President, livestock farming in my constituency, the West Midlands, is valued at GBP 1.16 billion, with 2% of the West Midlands workforce employed in the agriculture sector.
Accordingly, this contentious issue has the ability to directly affect the livelihood of many of my constituents who live in rural communities across the West Midlands, from the Staffordshire moorlands to the Vale of Evesham and the Welsh Marches.
This debate must always be driven and informed by science and the knowledge and best practice that our agriculture sector has, and certainly not profit-driven by multinational corporations looking to decrease production costs, potentially at the expense and health of the consumer.
We must be very careful on this path, and if cloned meat is to be used in meats and animal products, it should always be clearly labelled so that the consumer can always make a proper and informed choice on what they decide to eat.
I have received over 1 000 emails from my constituents on this issue, making clear how this issue directly concerns the British electorate. Accordingly, it should be debated and voted on in the British Parliament, whose members are elected and accountable – unlike the European Commissioner."@en1
