"Mr President, while there is support in Parliament for a ban, there is much disagreement about how long that ban should last and how far it will go. When it comes to EU policy—making our core guiding principles should be quite simple: follow the science. Evidence-based policy—making should be at the heart of what we do. For example, we have to take into account the impact of a ban if it were to include germinal products of cloned animals – their descendants – and embryo clones. That could have serious consequences for animal breeders and scientific research in Europe. In 2008, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) found no indication of any differences in food safety between food products from healthy cloned animals compared to those from conventionally—bred animals. A ban on the import of these products would be challenged according to the existing WTO rules. This is a very sensitive issue, I am aware of that, and there are legitimate concerns about animal welfare. However, I feel that this report very much extends the scope of the Commission’s original proposal, it is legally unenforceable and quite frankly a piece of legislation we could do without."@en1
