"Mr President, millions across Europe are saying that they will not accept global trade any more if it means trading away the rules and standards we hold dearly. In showing that we can still decide for ourselves and keep – or even strengthen – the protections that we deem necessary, while of course respecting our international commitments, this legislation demonstrates that we can regulate globalisation for the benefit of people and the planet. In the Committee on International Trade we reviewed this proposal to ensure that it was absolutely compatible with WTO rules. We even found that we could go further than the Commission had initially proposed and ban not just the cloned animals, but also their offspring. This is an important piece of legislation and it bears witness to the crucial role that the EU plays and must play to protect our citizens in our rapidly changing world."@en1
