"I was pleased to support this report on resource efficiency: moving towards a circular economy. This was the Parliament’s contribution to this important initiative promoting the circular economy which the Commission will launch at the end of the year. Minimising waste generation and resource use will not only reduce costs but will also increase EU competitiveness. At the moment we are not reaching our full potential, but a 30% increase in resource productivity in the next 15 years could boost GDP by 1% and create over 2 million jobs.
The Report had several strong demands by Parliament, including updated European waste and recycling targets as well as targets on food waste and the creation of economic incentives. I was particularly happy to support the inclusion of an indicator on resource efficiency in the European Semester and a proposal for green public procurement requirements."@en1
