"I voted in favour of this report on the circular economy and am pleased that the majority of the European Parliament has as well, especially in light of the Commission’s decision to withdraw the waste proposal earlier this year. This vote by Parliament will hopefully put pressure on the Commission to come forward with an ambitious proposal by the end of this year.
Whilst I would have preferred to see a mandatory 30% target for overall resource use in the EU instead of a temporary one, overall this report sets out an ambitious signal to the European Commission.
The Commission must now seize the opportunity to build upon the Parliament’s recommendations and come forward with legislation which is stronger than their original proposals. It is essential that we end our overconsumption of natural resources now. Any such move will not only benefit our environment but also contribute to significant cost-savings whilst creating an estimated 2 million new jobs by 2050."@en1
