"The adoption of this Directive by the European Parliament is an important step in the improvement of seafarers’ employment rights, including safeguards if redundancies are proposed, protection for workers when shipping companies are transferred to new owners, and rights to be informed and consulted on matters affecting key working conditions. European level employers and trade unions are in favour of the new rights and were responsible at the outset for agreeing the content of the Directive. Despite this clear consensus, UK Conservative MEPs were amongst the very few members of the Parliament who voted against. Along with my Labour and other colleagues in the Socialists and Democrats Group in the Parliament, I supported this sensible and progressive measure to help protect quality jobs and decent standards in the shipping sector. It is also welcome that we secured a reduction in the proposed implementation period for the new Directive from five to two years. In its ongoing review of the Maritime Strategy to 2018, the European Commission should take full account of the significance of fair terms and conditions of work and the positive contribution of collective bargaining for the success of the maritime sector."@en1
