"I voted for this report as it brings an opportunity to make improvements and create a new generation model that addresses the weaknesses identified in other agreements. There is no doubt that such a trade agreement will benefit the EU, and Ireland in particular, with our strong economic ties.
Irish exporters currently pay EUR 300 million in tariffs to the US Treasury. These barriers inhibit exports from Ireland and impose costs.
The shape of any investor and state dispute settlement (ISDS) system will ultimately be the subject of negotiation and agreement between the EU and the US. A major public consultation has taken place on this issue within the EU and the concerns which have been raised will feed into the negotiation process.
I am confident that any final deal will address those and any other concerns comprehensively and that the sovereign right of governments to legislate in the public interest will be safeguarded, as has been confirmed today by Parliament’s vote on TTIP."@en1
