"I voted against this report as it is Sinn Féin’s position that the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership being negotiated by the European Commission and United States will have disastrous consequences for democracy in Member States, the environment, labour rights and public services based on the current mandate.
I voted in favour of several amendments including some which I drafted which would, if enacted, have helped protect Irish interests. These ranged from an outright rejection of the current TTIP project to specific amendments aimed at protecting workers’ rights, food and water standards, public services, and the environment.
Sinn Féin is opposed to any form of ISDS – investor-state dispute settlement – as this mechanism undermines democratic institutions and could potentially limit the potential of governments to enact legislation aimed at improving the lives of citizens when such legislation conflicts with corporate interests.
There is massive public opposition to the secretive trade deal among my constituents. The TTIP will have a seriously detrimental impact in Ireland – on jobs, agriculture, the environment, workers’ rights and vital public services."@en1
