"Mr President, as a member of the EPP—subtitled Christian Democrats, any type of religious discrimination – especially against Christians – grates very heavily. This is particularly the case here with the two church leaders, Pastors Yat Michael and Peter Yen, who were arrested and who now possibly face the death penalty merely for professing their Christian faith. This is appalling, and we must certainly do everything we can to get these two eminent and wonderful pastors freed, especially as Sudan has ratified the relevant UN and African Union conventions guaranteeing religious freedom. But, of course, it is totally ignoring them. This is something that we in the European Parliament and the Commission must really do something about as quickly as we can. Also, we should not ignore the situation in Darfur, where similar discrimination is carried out, where 2.5 million people are dispatched, and where 4.5 million people need humanitarian aid. Sudan really needs our assistance."@en1
