"I supported the Reda report given it succeeds in striking a good balance between ensuring the rights of authors and performers, on the one side, and access to culture and information, on the other side. The cultural and creative sector accounts for up to 4.5% of the EU GDP and gives work to 8.5 million people, meaning it not only provides a crucial contribution to cultural development and diversity, but is also vital for the real economy. Yet while the world has advanced to the digital age, copyright is still stuck in the past, meaning authors and performers do not receive fair pay for performances exploited via online media and many of them are in too weak a position to negotiate better terms. I hope that when the Commission comes forward with a proposal on copyright reform later this year, it will include strong measures to render copyright fit for the digital age, facilitate cross-border access to creative content on fair and reasonable terms across the EU, and ensure authors’ and performers’ rights as well as adequate remuneration."@en1
