"Mr President, I re-echo my colleague’s work on the voting. I was very pleased today that the European Parliament confirmed the freedom of panorama. I was one of the 100-plus MEPs who submitted the amendment which reads: ‘Recognises the right to use photographs, video footage and other images of works which are permanently located in public places’.
A very significant number of citizens contacted me on this issue, and they were very concerned about it. In fact, of course, this was just an own-initiative report which means it had no legislative effect, none whatsoever, so their fears were unfounded. However, having said that, it is best that there is no mention anywhere of circumventing freedom of panorama.
If, in the future, Parliament looks at a legislative proposal from the Commission on copyright, obviously what we say there will have an impact in law. But what we voted on today has no impact, either at European or national level, on any law."@en1
