"I voted in favour of the Kukan report, given that developments we have witnessed over the past years in both our Eastern and Southern neighbourhood impose the need for a thorough review of our neighbourhood policy (ENP). If the EU wants to bring stability and prosperity to its neighbourhood, it should develop a more flexible, strategic and politically driven approach tailored to the needs and contexts of individual countries covered by the ENP.
Given that the lack of freedom, prosperity and human rights have been a main breeding ground for the instability we have witnessed in countries both East and South of Europe, I welcome that the report underscores the importance of enhancing the social dimension of the ENP, including the need to fight against poverty and discrimination, and to promote human and women’s rights – points which were championed by my group.
I welcome the work that is undertaken jointly by the Council and Commission on this revision exercise and hope this report, which enjoys broad support in the European Parliament, will be taken as an important guiding line towards a stronger, more effective and result-oriented ENP."@en1
