"Mr President, I too rise to condemn the horrific terrorist attacks in Tunisia, which targeted mostly European citizens – many of them British, and some from my own constituency of the West Midlands. It brings back for us the pain of the 7/7 attacks, which we are commemorating in London. I would therefore like to offer my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Tunisian people, who have seen their country come under attack for the second time in just months.
With a new constitution and successful parliamentary and presidential elections, Tunisia is an example for other countries in the region to follow. This is why we need to step up our engagement even further. Firstly, we need to gear up counter-terrorism and security dialogue with Tunisia and make sure that the state of emergency meets the high standards of international law. We also need to explore how we can offer support through the centres of excellence on terrorist prevention which are being set up by the Commission. Given that tourism is the second largest job creator, it is also crucial that we focus on specifying security measures for this sector for the future safety not just of Europeans, but of all others in Tunisia as well."@en1
