"Mr President, security in Europe and its wider neighbourhood is being challenged every day. The recent terrorist attacks by ISIL demand our full attention. Once more, we see the terrorists have no mercy. They do not discriminate; they are modern bandits who kill Muslims and non-Muslims alike. In the last few weeks they have killed tourists in Tunisia, Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai, Pakistani bus travellers in Karachi, worshippers during prayer in Kuwait, and beheaded one person in France. The death numbers are more than statistics, they are reminders that the fight against extremism, globally and here in Europe, is far from over. There is also good news: the Muslim world is increasingly taking a firm stance against extremism falsely conducted in the name of Islam. The EU should support such efforts by partner governments as well as ordinary citizens. However, a long-term solution depends on us solving the underlying root causes. Primarily, we must achieve a comprehensive, just and enduring Middle East peace. The EU must win the war against extremism right here in Europe. A recent public opinion poll suggests that 46% of Britons believe Muslims do not share British values. This is devastating. Not only is it not true, it has also fuelled the extremist narrative. EU Member States must increase cooperation in pre-empting further radicalisation of our citizens. We must work within communities, addressing questions of integration and identity, as well as ensuring that there is justice and that the social and economic well-being of all Europeans are adequately met."@en1
