"A Uachtaráin, ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh Phríomh-Aire na Gréige go Parlaimint na hEorpa. I come from Ireland, and the Irish people – like most people in Europe – want to see Greece remaining within the euro and within the European Union. The question is: does Mr Tsipras and his government want that? I think we should know the answer as soon as possible if that is ideologically against their wishes. Secondly, I want to say that I listened carefully to Mr Tsipras. He spoke about corruption, tax evasion and inequalities in Greek society. What has he done to address that in the past six months, and what will he do to address those failings in the next six or 12 months? As I said, I am from Ireland. Six years ago we were in a similar position to Greece. We were regarded as the basket case of Europe, but with good leadership, taking the decisions that were necessary and engaging with our partners in Europe, we negotiated our way out of the difficulties. Was it hard? Boy, was it hard. People lost their houses; people lost their savings; people lost their jobs; people lost their children to immigration. But now, thankfully, because we took the hard medicine, we have the fastest-growing economy in Europe, at 4.8%. That is because of good leadership. I say to Mr Tsipras: leadership is about giving leadership and taking the hard decisions, not going around Europe giving interviews to every newspaper, television station and radio station, as we have seen. I would suggest to him that he go back to Greece, bring his colleagues together for two days and come up with a sensible reform package. He will not be found wanting in meeting them more than half way."@en1
