"Madam President, I am deeply sorry for the Greek people. They have been ill-served by a corrupt political class who spent too much and borrowed too much for far too long. Not only did Greece fiddle its economic statistics in order to join the euro, but the other states knew they were a fiction. Greece was allowed to join the euro because it was always a political, rather than an economic, project. Sad to say, the euro is not working. Nor are millions of young people in Greece and across Europe.
I am not surprised that the Greek people voted ‘no’ to reject further austerity. Further tax rises now are insane. I would have voted ‘no’ as well. But if I were a taxpayer in a eurozone country, I would also vote ‘no’ to giving Greece any more money. Greece is bankrupt, and it would be best if the eurozone states admitted this to their taxpayers. Mr Tsipras, your behaviour suggests you know Greece has to leave the euro, but you do not want to admit it. You are waiting to be kicked out so you can play the martyr. I recommend you negotiate an orderly exit from the euro, which is the best chance Greece has of recovering."@en1
