"Madam President, I would also very much like to thank colleagues for their warm words this evening, and the report, I think, really does reflect the work across most of the political groups. I want to see how we can make the green jobs report link with the employment guidelines so that we really do move this forward. One thing I do regret is that I did not get the name of the anonymous Spanish economist so that I can check on the figures we were being given about the job swap, because I really hope that we are not just seeing some jobs go, green jobs come in, and somebody making the assumption that green ones are forcing the others out. We live in a world of change, and the way in which we get through that transition and try to do that in the best interests of all of us and our planet is very important. The potential is clear – we have heard that from so many people in this room tonight. Whether it is the social impact and the environmental impact of energy efficient buildings, or whether it is working on renewable energies. These are jobs, a lot of which are ‘ ’ and not offshore, which can make a real difference to people’s lives. As regards the small business sector, we have figures showing that 93% of small businesses have tried to take some small step towards resource efficiency. It saves them money. They believe it is the right thing to do, and they want to do more of it, but they need support. They need support in terms of the skills, and they need support in terms of actually finding support that might be out there in financial terms. I would like to make an advert here: the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs has, I think, put forward a very useful pilot project along these lines that I hope Members will support. The skills development is crucial, but it is not enough; it is about that broad coherent policy framework. So I really hope the Commission is going to take this on board, as we have heard, in the energy union and the circular economy package. We cannot leave this sort of change to chance. It needs to be managed if we are really to see the full potential – socially, economically and environmentally."@en1
