"Madam President, to those who would question the job potential of green jobs, I would point them to the submissions the committee received from various sectors of our economy, pointing to the potential for jobs in this area, particularly those in the construction area in terms of refurbishing old buildings and public buildings right across Europe. There is enormous job potential there in terms of upskilling people in plumbing, and for electricians, using the digital economy and technology to upgrade our public buildings. That is just one area. I do not understand the opposition and the questioning of the potential for green jobs in our economy. The inefficient use of resources needs to be tackled – climate change, the impact of our actions on the environment: the more knowledge we have, the more potential we have to protect these areas. Innovation, how to tackle pollution, how to tackle pollution of our waterways, waste disposal, energy efficiency, various areas in which jobs in the green economy can be created. I would like to thank Jean Lambert for her support and for her work with the various groupings in producing this report. One area that I think is very important – and the Commissioner touches upon this – is the area of skills and the need to develop skills for the green economy, which is particularly relevant to young people. We have had this discussion before on the need to match skills to the needs of industry, to the needs of the marketplace, and I think it is something where the Commission has very strong role to play with the Member States in ensuring that education and training establishments develop the necessary skills for such jobs."@en1
