"Madam President, the ending of the quota for milk production after 30 years presents a challenge for the dairy industry, but also a wonderful opportunity. It has been met with a positive reaction in Ireland, where farmers, as we speak, are looking at investing and upgrading their systems to improve and increase production. I welcomed the report and was happy to support it, particularly given the fact that it recognises the importance of the dairy sector for feeding our own people and particularly for exports. It also looks at the implementation of measures to address price volatility, which are a point of major concern to those farmers who are in the business of producing milk. I think that is somewhere where the Commissioner can – and should – make a clear statement, because there is uncertainty there, particularly for farmers who want to invest but whose relationship with their bank is not as good as it could be in many cases. Certainly, certainty in the area of intervention would help."@en1
