"Mr President, TTIP is estimated to be worth GBP 100 billion to the European Union. This would provide immense opportunities in my own constituency, and indeed right across Europe. But no trade negotiations are without risk. That is why we must have appropriate safeguards. Right from the start I have said that agriculture should not be used as a bargaining chip in any negotiations with the United States, and in writing the opinion of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development on TTIP, my main focus was to put the retention of European food standards at the top of the agenda. I am pleased that the report highlights the importance of geographical indicators (GIs). My colleagues from Italy and France may have many more GIs than I do in my part of the world, but producers of products with GIs certainly realise the value these have and recognise the benefits of their protection in any free trade. TTIP also has great potential export opportunities for many sectors, and especially for the dairy sector in agriculture, due in no small part to the sheer size of the US marketplace. We must have a fair and balanced TTIP that protects vulnerable sectors, protects public service and allows the maximum use of the opportunities of a closer trade relationship with the United States."@en1
