"Madam President, I just wanted to raise the issue this evening of the Falsified Medicines Directive and to say that, from 1 July, there is a requirement on all registered pharmacies in the European Union to have a logo so that people buying medicines online can be sure of the provenance of those drugs. We know that over 60% of drugs bought online by citizens are falsified, and some of these drugs have caused the deaths of citizens in the European Union. At the moment a young man’s death in Ireland is being investigated because of a product he bought online.
However, I think we have a bigger problem with websites outside the European Union. The Commission needs to look at other ways of informing citizens, as well as tackling the issue of websites that are offering not only medicines, but prescription medicines – very dangerous products – with those who are buying them being unaware of whether they are safe to consume. So it is a warning to consumers. Watch for the logo."@en1
