"Mr President, I admit I have got serious concerns about this project’s ability to deliver value for money and whether it will actually help small and medium-sized businesses or merely become an avalanche of paperwork. My colleague Marco Zanni put it very well when he said that we are socialising losses and privatising profit. If you want a case study of why this kind of thing does not work, you have only got to look at the British Labour Party and the disastrous PFI (private finance initiative) that was introduced, part-privatising our British NHS. When we voted on this matter in committee, the words used by one of the rapporteurs about the aims of this project were particularly telling. He said: ‘We asked the question: would you use your own plastic, your own personal credit card to pay for a project like this?’ Then after all the negotiations, he said at the end, ‘Well, I am not sure whether people would still use their plastic on this project’. Well, I have got news for you: when you spend money it is your credit card we are using, but it is also mine, and everybody else’s credit card across the whole of Europe, and that is what we need to think of before spending taxpayers’ money."@en1
