"For many years the allegations of corruption and foul play against FIFA have been wide and varied. The resignation of Sepp Blatter and the subsequent criminal investigations will shed light on much of this and will mark a chance for the organisation to clean up its reputation, finding space in the headlines related to football rather than scandal. Clearly there needs to be an investigation into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively. A key aim of FIFA is to further the causes of democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Few could legitimately argue that a country waging war against a sovereign state and another employing migrant workers with few rights to build the infrastructure for the event itself embody those values. On this note, I think we should also take time to question the value in awarding the inaugural European Games to Azerbaijan by the European Olympic Committee. Civil and human right abuses are well documented in that country and I would question the value in offering any international endorsement to such a regime."@en1
