"I voted in favour of the resolution on the recent revelations of high-level corruption cases in FIFA because we cannot allow money laundering, racketeering, bribery and fraud to undermine our societies. Done the right way, events like the World Cup have the potential to bring people together and create jobs and growth. But done the wrong way, as is the case with FIFA, it spreads corruption along with its devastating impact on society and eats away at quality employment. One only needs to look at Qatar – whose appointment as host of the cup is incomprehensible – where migrant workers are enslaved on World Cup construction sites and are dying at a rate of one every two days, according to recent reports. We cannot be complicit in this. The EU should exert pressure on FIFA when it operates in the European market and do all in its power to make sure FIFA starts playing by the rules."@en1
