"I voted against the final report on the strategic military situation in the Black Sea Basin following the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. This report represents an increasingly militarised EU approach to the situation in the region. Given Sinn Féin’s commitment to Irish neutrality I voted against many aspects within the report that called for a greater militarised approach.
The final report included aspects such as the possibility of mobilising European naval and airspace assets to the Black Sea, and called on NATO to continue to develop its cyber and missile defence capabilities. The report also urged the Commission to support the Member States in their efforts to identify solutions by which to raise their defence budget to the level of 2% and welcomed the pledge made by members of NATO to ensure that their defence spending reaches a minimum of 2% GDP by 2024.
Increased military spending, especially in a time of economic crisis where ordinary people are already suffering as a result of savage budget cuts, is deplorable. The militarised approach this report advocates would only escalate tensions further in the region. This is why I voted against this report."@en1
