"Madam President, I too was in Nepal just two weeks before the tragedy. Seeing the images of the devastation of areas we visited was heart-breaking – 2.8 million people are in dire need of aid, and nearly a million of them live in hard-to-reach areas. Reaching them must be a priority before the upcoming monsoon rains cause further damage and access to them is cut off. Free and smooth access should be facilitated for all incoming humanitarian aid, which should be distributed fairly to all. I welcome the EU’s assistance. However, as the UN has pointed out, much more international support is needed. Nepal also needs an aid package for long-term recovery and development, including safeguards against future natural disasters. The International Donors Conference in Kathmandu is welcome, and I urge the EU to play an active role in it. The S&D Group is fully committed to supporting Nepal’s ongoing efforts towards recovery, peace and prosperity. We hope the disastrous earthquake will unite all the political forces in Nepal, as it is now even more necessary than before to reach a political consensus."@en1
