"Mr President, for the moment, the cultural cleansing undertaken by Daesh at other precious sites they have seized has not taken place at Palmyra, one of the greatest of all cultural treasures of the Middle East.
As a former UNESCO World Heritage Site chairman myself, the thought that this wondrous jewel could be destroyed concerns me and so many others deeply, never forgetting that probably over 1 000 people have lost their lives in and around the site. Indeed, the destruction of such sites is in fact contrary to Islamic scholarship, where previous civilisations and the learning and architecture of antiquity was studied, preserved, often incorporated and, in a positive sense, used. As my colleague Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has put it: this is not a clash of civilizations; it is a struggle between civilisation and nihilism, and it is a fight we must win."@en1
