"Mr President, it may be somewhat cynical – but accurate nevertheless – to say that if there was a World Cup for corruption, then FIFA would win it hands down. Certainly, if we are to believe the allegations of USD 150 million in bribes (which may only turn out to be the tip of the iceberg), there is a serious problem with FIFA which, thankfully, now is being investigated. This is terrible, because it is a betrayal of what is called ‘the beautiful game’. For the millions of players, fans, parents, coaches and teachers who give their time at grassroots level on a voluntary basis, the least they can expect is good governance and a good example at the top. They are not getting this now. Hopefully things will change, because they need to change. Two colleagues from Ireland, Diane Dodds and Liadh Ní Riada, have referred to the EUR 5 million given by Mr Blatter to the FAI in a secret deal containing a confidentiality clause which meant that we did not find out about it until recently because of a certain clamour over a World Cup qualifying game. This shows that Mr Blatter saw the vast wealth of FIFA as almost his personal gift to give to subsidiaries when necessary. I was President of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland. It was a great honour and a great responsibility, and it also carries great power. One of the things we do in our organisation is to limit the term of office. I think that is the key here today. If there was a limit, as we have, of 3 years or 5 years, then you would be getting new blood coming through. Corruption, if it occurred, could not be embedded, and certainly what we have seen in FIFA would be averted because, while Mr Blatter has been President for a large number of years, you would have had a change of guard coming forward all the time. I think this is an essential first step for FIFA."@en1
