"Mr. President, I welcome the investigation into certain FIFA officials about allegations of corruption. The details that have emerged are shocking, but not altogether surprising, as for too long FIFA has been able to dodge allegations of wrongdoing under the guidance of Sepp Blatter. It has emerged that the Football Association in the Republic of Ireland received five million euros in a secret deal to buy its silence following controversy during a 2010 World Cup qualifying playoff match. Hopefully Mr Blatter has now realised that you cannot just throw money at a problem to make it go away.
I would also call upon decision-makers in the Football Association of Ireland to immediately pay back this money. If they have any integrity, they will do this. To fail to do so would be complicit in the corruption that seems to be at the heart of FIFA.
What has unfolded is appalling, but FIFA has the opportunity to redeem itself, and this will only happen if it becomes fully transparent. Many lovers of the beautiful game will require clear evidence that change will take place before they can put their trust in FIFA to take that game forward. To sit in silence or to do nothing would be a betrayal of those fans."@en1
