"As a vociferous critic of the direction in which President Erdogan has been leading Turkey over the past decade, I speak today with a touch of optimism. With the parliamentary elections of 7 June 2015 depriving Erdogan’s AK party of the majority he has relied on to impose his will, and with the Kurdish party passing the 10% threshold for the first time to take up to 80 seats, this could perhaps mark the horizon of better things to come.
A different type of government would do more to honour its role as a NATO ally in the fight against ISIS, truly to honour its commitments as an EU candidate country to align its foreign policy more closely with that of EU Member States, as outlined in Chapter 31 of the acquis, and to refrain from any interference in the Cyprus reunification talks which are taking on an increasingly optimistic tone following the election of Akinci as leader of Turkish-Cypriot community. Turkey has great potential as an emerging major economy, with a talented and diverse population, straddling the divide between East and West. At present I do not foresee such a Government emerging, especially as Erdogan is already talking of fresh elections, but I hope to be proved wrong."@en1
