"I supported this report given it sends out a strong, clear and detailed message to Turkey, a key strategic partner of the EU. The accession process gives us a very effective carrot to encourage significant reform, bringing more democracy, security and stability to Turkey, and therefore Europe and the region. I therefore find it disappointing that parties on the right are willing to forsake the opportunity to move forward on these crucial issues for the benefit of an easy and populist discourse on migration. By hosting nearly 2 million refugees, Turkey is also instrumental in maintaining stability in our neighbourhood and it is in our interest that we support the country in this effort. But let it be clear that core European values will need to be upheld if Turkey wants to make further progress on accession. We cannot accept a backslide on democratic reforms in fields like the independence of the judiciary, freedom of expression and the media, and the rights of minorities and women. We expect a new government to make progress on these key reforms, including by finding a sustainable solution to the peace process with the Kurdish community and lowering the 10% electoral threshold."@en1
