Hungary, like any other EU Member State, should uphold fundamental rights and the rule of law, and all Member States, Hungary included, need a mechanism/body to monitor and enforce those rights. Furthermore I support the statement that the death penalty is incompatible with the values of respect for human dignity and freedom. By adopting this resolution we in the European Parliament are calling on Commissioner Timmermans to assume his responsibility, in conjunction with all the other Commissioners, and to put in place the mechanism that will permit the role of the Commission as guardian of the Treaties to be exercised."@en1
