"We cannot stay silent on the fact that Prime Minister Orbán has indicated his willingness to open the door to reinstating the death penalty, or the fact that he has launched a public ‘consultation’ with the clear intention to frame the debate on migration in the context of terrorism. This is not about political point-scoring for the left, as some conservative MEPs, including from the UK, would have the public believe. This is about engaging in a debate and taking a clear position on statements made by Prime Minister Orbán which run counter to fundamental EU values and could jeopardise the security and wellbeing of citizens far beyond Hungarian borders. That is why I supported the call to the Commission to initiate a monitoring process on the situation of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary. What credibility can we have in the world if we do not address concerns within our borders that we require others to address? And what credibility do we have amongst our citizens if we remain silent in the face of policies that threaten to violate the fundamental values for which they have fought so hard?"@en1
