"Events in Ukraine have highlighted more than anything the need for EU Member States to become more energy self-sufficient and to diversify their energy supplies. As Russia becomes ever more belligerent in its war against Ukraine, we have become increasingly aware of the problems of relying so heavily on Russia for gas imports – some Member States rely on Russia for 100% of their gas imports. Energy imports cost EU Member States up to EUR 1 billion per day now, as over half of all energy consumption is met by imports. Completing the internal energy market is therefore of more importance than ever. My Group broadly welcomed the initial report published by the rapporteur, so I am sad to see that so much of that good work has been lost during the amendment process. This has resulted in a report that places too much emphasis on goals outside the perspective of this report and has allowed ideological principles to trump the much—needed aims and merits of the original report. With this in mind, I am forced in this case to vote against the report but this does not dent my enthusiasm for greater work to ensure energy security."@en1
