"Mr President, it is important that Europe would take a balanced approach to increase our energy security and to reduce our dependence, particularly on external supplies.
Energy security is a key pillar of the Union, and the report highlights a number of areas in energy efficiency, renewables and the diversification of the sources of imported energy into Europe. Of course the energy mix of every country is a matter of national competence. In Ireland we are free to determine the energy sources used and the natural resources that will be exploited.
There is a major emphasis on this, and I think that emphasis needs to be increased and that this point should be underlined when speaking to individual countries introducing energy efficiencies, particularly in commercial buildings. There is a focus on domestic dwellings, but there is a huge potential to introduce energy efficiencies in commercial businesses as well. It will be important for Ireland to develop interconnectors with the UK and, potentially, France as well.
I am strongly in favour of the current moratorium on fracking in Ireland, and I support the government’s position that no decision will be taken on any proposal for the use of hydraulic fracturing until such time as the human health impacts of fracking are addressed. A report is currently being commissioned by the Environment Protection Agency in Ireland and we are waiting for the outcome of that report."@en1
