"Given her ongoing encroachment into sovereign Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea, it is ironic that Mr Putin at the weekend declared that his nation is no threat to the West. We have seen reported violation after violation of international law, allegations of widespread corruption and the suppression of fundamental freedoms of speech, press and political opposition in Russia. This is an affront to democracy and should be met with sanctions, whether they are in terms of trade or diplomatic ties. However this is not a line we take lightly. The Russian import-ban has destabilised agriculture markets right across Europe. Unfortunately, Northern Ireland has been adversely affected, especially the dairy and pork sectors, with farm gate prices falling. Product in transit was also refused, costing dairy processors significantly, and with no support from the Commission. Ultimately, amidst sending a message of zero tolerance to Russia, the Commission must focus on finding new markets and doing more to offset those affected through no fault of their own."@en1
