"Mr President, again I am very pleased to support this report, and again it is great to see the vast majority voting in favour. Obviously the conclusion of the agreement with Iceland is a good move and sends out a proper signal. One thing I would like to highlight though is that we have to be very careful at European level to balance our needs for food security with climate change, and there is a grave danger that we could bring in measures that would be counter-productive in terms of the development of our agriculture but also in actually creating greater emissions through displacement.
Already we have made good progress, particularly in the CAP, where greening was an essential element and, indeed, a lot of measures now at Member States level are being put in place to reduce emissions through agriculture. But we must not at the same time finish up in a situation where we are over-strict on agriculture, which actually leads to greater emissions worldwide, as we have seen with some of the measures we have taken in the past."@en1
