"I supported the proposal on the ratification by the EU of the Doha amendment to the Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC. The EU has already committed to a 20% reduction target under its 2020 climate and energy package and so this does not in any way affect Member States’ individual obligations under the 2020 framework. By continuing its participation in the Kyoto Protocol, the EU is confirming its commitment to lead international efforts to stop climate change. This ratification simply means the international recognition of efforts already being undertaken by the EU. Even if only a few countries outside the EU have taken on legally binding targets for the second commitment period from 2013 to 2020, it is an important bridge between the current international climate regime and the new international agreement to be adopted at the Paris Conference in December."@en1
