"I voted in favour of the Gardini report on the conclusion of the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto protocol, in which the EU commits itself to limiting the average annual greenhouse gas emissions between 2013 and 2020 to 80% of base year emissions, because we need to send a strong signal about the efforts and the leadership of the EU and its Member States to address climate change. Global warming is costing the world more than USD 1.2 trillion a year and EU citizens are telling us we should act. In the UK, nearly 70% of people say we are not doing enough to tackle climate change. Climate change is posing a threat to the security and well-being of all, but the EU can be instrumental in turning this around. The plan to have 90 000 diplomats in over 3 000 missions lobbying to win pledges on carbon cuts from countries ahead of the Paris summit on climate change shows the huge added value coordination on climate change on EU level can have. The Paris summit will be crucial in tackling one of the greatest threats of our time. We cannot afford to fail."@en1
