"I voted with my group in these recommendations. Gender equality is a fundamental value of the EU, and despite policies and strategies aimed at promoting this, full gender equality is still far from being achieved. Equality between men and women has been central to the EPP Group’s priorities, and the alternative resolution presented by the group is a good, pragmatic framework for us to follow going forward. Violence against women is a pressing issue that must be resolved, and I am strongly in favour of the actions proposed in this resolution.
Regarding education and access to the labour market, this proposal is strong. It is imperative that we strive to develop female entrepreneurship in both urban and rural areas, through advice, training, facilitation of access and reduction of obstacles. Increased participation of women in political and economic decision-making is another aspect of this proposal. Ireland has made good progress in this regard, and I hope that a strong resolution today will advance that progress further.
The EU’s new strategy must emphasise the key role that Member States have to play in the fight for gender equality, and this resolution respects the powers of the Member States, for example in terms of ethical or family law issues."@en1
