"Whilst I am an active campaigner raising the issue of equality for the UK’s Gypsy and Traveller communities, and accordingly support the principle of equality, I voted against this strategy as I feel strongly that the issues of gender equality raised in this manner don’t create a level playing field in relation to individual ability. I was elected to this place in second spot on UKIP’s West Midlands list, behind my colleague Jill Seymour. Jill was voted to the top of that list in a fair and equal ballot of UKIP party members, and accordingly, I have more respect for ladies who achieve on merit, rather than those in similar positions on the ground of gender equality. I believe that it is insulting to successful women that they may be mistakenly looked upon in some quarters as only being in such a position by virtue of legislation. The result of this proposal is accordingly counter-productive."@en1
