"Madam President, I am sure that a lot of people would not like to see me on the list, but thank you very much. I say that to make a light of humour to fill this Chamber.
This is an own-initiative report by a Member of this House, Mrs Noichl. An own-initiative report is an opportunity for an MEP to freewheel, to create ideas for himself, to make himself look good to people in this Chamber and to issue an opportunity for the Commission to make rules on people across Europe. It is not about gender and equality; it is simply an opportunity for people in the Commission to control the nation states of Europe.
That is why I opposed this particular motion. I support gender equality and I support rights for women, but I believe that they should be controlled from the British Parliament. We will have a referendum next year, where the people of Britain will have the opportunity to say whether they believe the European Union should control their lives or whether the British Parliament should control their lives. I believe it is the British Parliament."@en1
