"Mr President, the usual hypocrisy within the EU institutions continues unabated. The EU gasps in horror at yet another tragedy facing this country but, as usual, says one thing and does another. Why is it that President Mugabe can still visit a European country despite a ban?
But the problem goes a lot further. If human rights activists such as this are being deliberately targeted because individuals had their eyes on the EUR 234 million annual EU grants, then here, in the EU institutions, we ought to look inwardly at the consequences of that grants programme. Because we are responsible for the situation that we have this morning and for other instances where voters’ rights and citizens’ rights in that country are at risk and individuals are also at risk in terms of their personal security and safety.
Let the EU look at itself and the consequences of that grants programme."@en1
