"Madam President, like many colleagues, I welcome these cautious signs of economic recovery in the EU but at the same time we do have to be realistic. We cannot forget that these signs are mainly due to external factors like low oil prices, a weak euro and the supporting programme of the ECB. We also cannot be blind to important economic differences between Member States, as well as crucial regional differences. Looking at my country, the economic situation of my constituency, the West Midlands, is profoundly different from the one in London. As long as these differences are not tackled in a structural way, it will be difficult for us to address economic growth in the EU. Therefore, I am convinced that a lot remains to be done to link to a sustainable growth path to help SMEs find the right access to financing, and to tackle youth unemployment in a serious way. There are three main structural regulatory challenges that we need to tackle in the coming months, which could contribute towards a sustainable growth path. A social reform of the economic governance rules with enough flexibility for Member States; making an ambitious European investment plan operational; and a swift and ambitious reform of the European Capital Markets Union."@en1
