"Madam President, I look on with interest at this. I see the summit is tomorrow, and you spoke about the achievements which have already been achieved, including the dealings with Ukraine. It is a peculiar definition of achievement if you look at the sorry state of affairs in that country at the moment, and my thoughts – and I am sure all of our thoughts – go to the people who are suffering there.
The constant drive by this place to expand its influence and authority, to take in more countries, does not seem to know any bounds or limits – even when you know that you are heading out into the sphere of influence of where Russia is, you know the situation there, and you know that it is putting peace at further risk. This seems a reckless method. It is almost like the enemy on Star Trek called The Borg, who just cannot help but assimilate. They take individuality and make everyone the same; everyone is under their sphere of control and it is their sole purpose for existence.
The more I am in this place, the more I feel that this is a very serious version of that. You cannot help but seek to expand constantly, grow, influence, and it needs to stop. You need to stop. Take a breath, and just think about what is going on. So, once again, I despair when I hear these things, and I truly hope that nothing bad will come of this summit."@en1
