"Mr President, it is imperative that the European Union continue to fulfil the obligations of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which it ratified in 2011, and which seeks the full integration and enhancement of people living with physical and mental impairments into education, employment and society as a whole.
Today’s motion comes in response to a list of questions posed by the UN Committee in April of this year aimed at driving forward change in many areas where problems and obstacles exist. It is positive, I feel, that Parliament has recognised the need to improve independent travel opportunities for those living with disabilities, as well as to safeguard effective access to justice, services, the labour market and improved communication with advocacy groups in this sector.
As an MEP for Northern Ireland, I work closely with many local charities, including Something Special in Eglinton, who provide an outlet in terms of skills training and employment for those living with learning difficulties. These organisations deserve continued EU financial and networking support in order to maximise their transformative work with this section of our community."@en1
