"Mr President, I supported this motion because it is clear that much more needs to be done to make sure that people with disabilities – and their carers – are offered the same opportunities as any other person. In the UK there are currently 1.3 million disabled people who are available and want to work, but only half of them are employed. Less than a quarter of disabled people have qualifications. Their carers are in a situation that is no better: 81% of at-work parents indicate that finding suitable childcare for a disabled child or children is a major barrier to pursuing a career. In the UK, again, we have 700 000 such children, and across the EU 15 million children, and their families whose options are potentially restricted through the lack of an enforceable entitlement to customised childcare. That is why it is crucial that the EU institutions step up their game to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This House can be instrumental in making sure that this happens."@en1
