"On the Oral Question and resolution on maternity leave, I voted in favour. The resolution condemns the Commission for suggesting it will withdraw a draft directive to amend legislation on maternity leave by granting 20 weeks paid maternity leave and paternity leave of two weeks.
The amended legislation was submitted by the European Parliament to the Council in 2010 based on implementing a 2000 ILO Convention on work-life balance. The Council has blocked it. This resolution was an important attempt to save the proposed amended legislation from being dumped.
Adequate and fair maternity leave is something everyone should be entitled to. It plays a crucial role in ensuring women can fully participate in the labour force and live fulfilling lives without being discriminated against at work for having children. For these reasons I voted in favour of this resolution."@en1
