"The proposed directive on the health and safety at work of pregnant workers and workers who have recently given birth or who are breastfeeding (Maternity Leave Directive) has been blocked in Council since 2010. There is a blocking minority of Member States who do not believe that it is within the EU’s legal competence to legislate on the specifics of maternity and paternity leave, notably regarding pay and duration.
The ECR position remains consistent: we would like to see the Commission withdraw the proposal and we remain opposed to the EU legislating on the pay and conditions of maternity and paternity leave"@en1
